This abstract photograph of the Beachy Head Lighthouse was taken during my first encounter with the white cliffs of the south coast of England in October 2018. My wife and I had taken a train to Eastbourne on what felt like the rainiest day we had ever experienced. Determined to walk along the cliffs despite the weather, we set off with rain hoods pulled tight.
We hiked through sheets of rain and gusting wind until we finally sought refuge in a pub near the lighthouse. Warmed by a hot drink and waiting for a break in the downpour, we eventually stepped back outside to find that the rain had lifted and a dense fog had settled over the cliffs.
As the fog rolled in, the lighthouse appeared as an abstract silhouette against the muted landscape. I captured this image just as the mist swallowed the horizon, leaving only the bold stripes of the Beachy Head Lighthouse visible. It’s a reminder that even the most miserable weather can turn into a moment of quiet magic.
