A Splash of Red on a Rainy German Day

This photograph was taken during a rainy day somewhere in Germany on a road trip with my grandparents. I don’t remember exactly where we were, but I was a kid peering out the car window at the world rushing by. The rain had slowed our journey, and we pulled over to take a break.

What caught my eye was this bright red sign mounted on a wall of grey stone. Against the dull sky and dripping architecture, the sign seemed to shout its message into the gloom. The contrast of the deep red paint and the weathered stone fascinated me, and I asked my grandparents to stop so I could take a picture.

Years later, I still smile at this image. The text on the sign still makes me laugh, and the memory of that rainy day evokes the warmth of travelling with my grandparents. Sometimes it’s the simplest details – a splash of colour on a grey day – that stay with us.

A splash of red on a rainy day – the cheeky slogan reads: “It’s not a car… it’s a way of life”
